This title is most relevant in terms of the most recent arc of where the narrative has been going to, and it has a small follow up (which I never played unfortunately.) called Into the Nexus, which is where Rift Apart is supposed to be picking up from.

Honestly, I haven't played this in years as I've not had a working PS3 in forever, but I really enjoyed this game, despite not really caring for the tone and direction of the overarching story starting with this game's predecessor. There's tons of satisfying side content, and the hover boots are great fun. It, like Going Commando, is a great expansive sequel on the game that preceded it. This is the largest, most polished, and probably overall "fun" of all the mainline games to this point.

Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time (2009): The fifth game in the mainline series the direct sequel to the first PS3 title.

Namely, more tongue-in-cheek humor with innuendos and a criticism of consumer culture run rampant. It also retains a lot of the tone/humor and narrative stylings of the original game, which would mostly disappear after this in the series.

This game is one of my prime video game examples of a sequel done right.

Those additions plus expanded space combat, specific planet collectables to earn more bolts, and arena combat challenges all became core staples of the main series starting with this game. This game adds a larger focus on the weapons and combat with the addition of the strafe & strafe dodge, the weapon and health experience systems, armors to buy to reduce damage, and the generally expanded arsenal compared to the original. For the longest time, this was my head and shoulders favorite. It and the original constantly go back and forth between which game I prefer. Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (2003 ): The first sequel. And most of what I mention above about it are reasons why I and many fans of the OG find the 2016 remake lackluster. This is one of my favorites in the series to this day. And Ratchet is in general a more 'rough-around-the-edges' lead protagonist and not really the "family friendly chipper" that he's moved towards as the series has gone on. Ratchet and Clank's relationship in it isn't just cheery smiles to start. It's a bit more sarcastic and "dark" in tone with most of the game being a satire/critique of capitalist/consumerist culture. The tone/style/narrative of this game (and its immediate sequel, to some extent) is also different from basically all of the sequels too. It lacks the side strafe and dodge that were introduced in the sequel, which became integral to how these games played going forward. It is more platforming, general exploration, and atmosphere focused with less of an emphasis on the arsenal and gun-focused combat that came to wholly define the series. It's quite a bit different from the later games in the series, and is closer to Insomniac's PS1 Spyro the Dragon games in terms of gameplay/game design. Ratchet & Clank (2002): The original game. And I suspect that 2016 will be rendered wholly obsolete by Rift Apart, so if you don't play it specifically right now, you may never have the desire to go back.Īll this said, I personally consider these three games to be the quintessential Ratchet & Clank experiences up to now: But it IS the most recent, graphically and mechanically "current" of the games. IMO R&C 2016 IS one of the weaker entries in the main series and is, generally, not essential. As others have said, in terms of narrative, it's not really necessary to play the 2016 remake of Ratchet & Clank.īut, if you want to have a grasp of where the series last was at technologically and game design/mechanically prior to experiencing Rift Apart, it might be worth a playthrough for that reason.
